Differentiated learning teaching techniques are incorporated in academic areas. In fifth grade, peer and ability groups are used to help meet the needs of different learning styles. Students are encouraged to work together and to learn from each other.
In math, cross grouping takes place between fourth, fifth, and sixth grade.
The fifth grade mathematics program continues the study of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and geometry. The curriculum relates math concepts to everyday living so that students can recognize the importance of mathematics.
Language arts skills are emphasized in fifth grade through vocabulary development, spelling, reading comprehension, and grammar. Weekly writing assignments focus on sentence construction, well-formed ideas, sequencing, and editing skills. Creative writing is taught through journaling and the use of a blog where the students and teacher can write and comment in positive ways with each other and the world. The reading series coordinates all areas of the language arts program.
Fifth graders learn American history starting with the early explorers and ending with the Reconstruction Period after the Civil War.
Science delves deeper into the areas of physical, earth, and life sciences. Experiments with “hands on” opportunities are offered in the classroom as well as the science lab.
Integration between the general studies and the Judaica class occur on a regular basis. Meetings are held weekly to develop ideas that will be beneficial to the fifth grade student. The formation of the “613 Club” helps the students to recognize and to implement different forms of mitzvot in their lives and in their community.
In the Judaic class, the fifth grade is becoming acquainted with the wisdom of the great rabbis and commentators throughout Jewish history. The study of the Hebrew language continues and there is an emphasis on Jewish holidays and songs.
